    COUNTRY CONTEXT

South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013. According to the UNHCR, the insecurity that followed has forced 1.9 million people to flee, whilst more than five million people need humanitarian assistance. UNICEF estimates that 250,000 children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and more than one million children are suffering from acute malnutrition.

    OPERATIONS

Medical provision in Lol State in the north west of Sudan has been badly affected by the civil war. The violence has forced the closure and disruption of medical facilities in the region, and few humanitarian agencies are operating there.

ALIMA began running medical programs in Lol State in May 2017. The organization supports the State Hospital in Lol’s capital, Raja, where a hospitalization and care unit has been set up. Medical teams treat children suffering from acute malnutrition, as well as acute diarrhea and respiratory infections.

In July, mobile health teams began offering free care to people living in the villages of Sopo and Mangayat, located outside of Raja town. Staff have so far cared for more than 500 patients. More than 80% were found to be suffering from malaria.
